Julia Garcia is best known for her role as the hilarious Emmy Mendoza on the hit series “Sydney to the Max” as well as numerous roles on such shows as “Fresh off the Boat” and “Station 19”. Now, this talented young actress is expanding her resume to include producing. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Julia on her career, upcoming projects, and goals for 2024.
What drew you into acting?
I love story telling. It’s important to tell people’s stories, it allows space to educate, and for people’s voices to be heard. Sharing one’s perspective can shift the way of thinking and enhance growth in others and ourselves.
What is your process for breaking down a character?
It’s important to understand that in a creative space, there’s always room for interpretation. I typically always start with breaking down the story. The situation or what’s happening in the scene is just as important as the character you’re portraying. I analyze the character’s state of mind and how the character feels about the situation to build perspective.
What do you look for in a film role?
For myself in particular, the character needs to have growth. It’s important for me to feel challenged. Putting myself in uncomfortable situations allows me to grow as an artist.
Tell us about your newest film project.
I recently found a love for producing and being behind the scenes. It’s important for me to learn all the different sides of the business. My next project begins filming in January. ‘Alone’ tells the story of a mythological creature from South America that possesses individuals within a family.

What is your advice for keeping a healthy work/life balance?
I thrive being busy and jumping from one thing to the next. Ultimately scheduling is the most important tool I use for balance. I am intentional when planning what I need to do for myself as well as making check lists for work purposes, so I don’t get distracted. Balance isn’t easy but being intentional with how I spend my time allows me to be the best version of yourself.
Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.
I’ve been boxing since I was four years old. I have an older brother and we’ve been training together since before I can remember. I also do Brazilian jujitsu, kickboxing, and Muay Thai.
What are your goals for 2024?
In 2024 I will be prioritizing my mental health and happiness which will fuel my creativity as an artist. My goal for 2024 is to continuously grow in all aspects and to be the best version of myself.
Any upcoming projects you can share?
This business is always a hustle and you’re constantly trying to secure the next role. The reality of the truth is that in Hollywood, you live in a world of maybes or almost. At the end of the day, we have NDAs constantly circulating, and you throw your name in a hat and wait to see if anything sticks. For me, there’s lots of auditioning and producers’ sessions going on. Thankfully the strike is over and now projects can move forward.
