Music has always been a part of Luke Judy’s life for as long as he can remember, and he is now making it a career. He is the second half of the Indie Rock Duo, Duplexity along with his sister Savannah Judy. Duplexity has been hard at work in the studio creating original music and has just debuted their first single ‘Billboards’ which is now steaming on all platforms. This catchy upbeat tune is the perfect sound for summer! I recently caught up with Luke for this interview about his new single and his plans for more music in the future.

What drew you into music?

I was drawn into music at a young age. Our dad is a musician, so he has always been my biggest influence. I think our parents bought us every toy instrument there was when we were really little, and we just grew into the real ones. Everything we did revolved around music. From watching musical shows like The Wiggles, singing in the car to our favorite songs to playing Guitar Hero video games.

What is your process for breaking down a song?

My process for breaking down a song to learn is, I attack it like a script because that’s my go to formula that I learned first. I listen to the song then I print the lyrics. I always put myself int the position of the storyteller so that I can be telling the story from their shoes. Then I begin to learn the chorus and verses. How I “break down” a song to write, is really always different.  I wait until I am inspired or have an idea that I think would be good for a song. Then I keep notes on that title or idea, I collaborate with whomever I am collaborating with, usually Savanah and before I know it we have a song.

What inspires you more in a song- the music or the lyrics?

I would have to say now that I am older and playing the guitar the music is what inspires me more than the lyrics. But when I was younger it was defiantly the lyrics because I was a singer. The more I learn about music theory and playing guitar the more I am inspired by the music.

Tell us about your newest single Billboards.

‘Billboards’ is our debut single; it is so fun! It is a lighthearted fun song about LA and being an actor. We really wanted to make our first song a sort of introduction to who we are and the places around town where we have great memories. The song goes “this is who we are” cause like lt or not we are actors and actors are striving for that notoriety and being on a billboard is the most LA achievement for actors. Everyone I know wants to be “up on those billboards”

What is your advice for keeping a healthy work/life balance?

My advice for keeping a work life balance is to always make sure you take time to do the things that make you happy. For me that is spending time with my friends jamming or playing video games. I have always really liked playing video games, ever since I was about 6. When I play video games it is very relaxing because I don’t think about anything else. Any  projects I am working on and anything that I may be thinking about is put on hold. I feel more focused when I do return to work mode and therefore more productive.

Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.

Something that people may be surprised to learn about me is that I graduated from high school at 15 with 23 college credits and a 4.16 GPA and that I am starting college this fall at 16. I will be majoring in Music and business. I want to always be involved in our family business so getting a business degree is very important to me.

What are your goals for 2023?

Most of my goals for 2023 are goals for Duplexity. We have some cool stuff in the works for the band and I am really excited. Another goal which is a persona goal is to really focus on my guitar skills and get to the next level.

Any upcoming projects you can share?

We have a lot of projects that we are working on. We are releasing our second single Sept 8th, our third single Oct 13 and our 5 song Debut EP on Oct 20th. We are also shooting music videos and have a few shows through the end of 2023.
