Actress and Singer/Songwriter Maya Delgado is constantly challenging herself. Whether it is an acting role or creating new music, she enjoys trying new things. This young talent is proving she will be a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. I was thrilled when Maya agreed to this interview about her career. Enjoy!

What drew you into acting?

Ever since I was very little, I have always performed in some capacity, whether it was singing on my makeshift living room stage or putting on plays for my family and neighbors.  I have always enjoyed evoking emotion in others through art. When I was 7 years old, my mom took me to a voice lesson because my grandma suggested it. That led to dance classes, then acting classes. Everything else grew from there and it’s always been a part of my life. There is something so special about acting that’s hard to explain, but I enjoy portraying different roles in my own way.

What is your process for breaking down a character?

It depends on what the role calls for but the first thing I like to figure out is my goal in the scene.  I also envision the reaction I want to achieve from the audience. I try to find my genuine self in the description of the character role.  Even though I am technically playing a different person, I find the part of myself that relates to the role.

What do you look for in a film role?

For me, there are two things I like to see in my characters. The first is someone or something very similar to me, where my persona is expressed in my character. On the other hand, it’s always fun to try out characters that are the complete opposite of who I am. It’s fun to be able to explore a new side of my abilities and challenge myself to work outside of my comfort zone.

Tell us about your role in Ghostwriter.

In Ghostwriter, I portrayed a strong-willed Latina feminist named Tess, and that role was really special for me because I was truly connected with her on a deeper level. She really spoke her truth and her character inspired other girls to speak up and stand their ground. I filmed in Canada, and I made great friends on set. I am very thankful I was able to work with an amazing crew and cast.

What is your advice for keeping a healthy work/life balance?

Balance is something I’m always working on! You have to figure out what is manageable for you in your circumstances because everyone has a different situation.  It’s important not to compare your schedule to someone else’s! What helps me balance my life is incorporating some sort of “me” time throughout the day. Recently, I have been journaling a lot to “de-clutter” my head.  I’m also reading books I have always wanted to read and never found the time to do so! (lol). Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day, that “me” time can help you reset and be refreshed for the next thing you have to do.

Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you.

As a freshman in high school, I completed two 1-year certificate programs from New York University (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts.  One was for Performing Arts and the other was from the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.  I was able to learn so much about both industries, the business aspects that artists should consider, and how to develop and evolve as an artist. They were both amazing programs and I’m really proud I put in the hard work to complete them both in one year!

What are your goals for 2023?

It’s crazy to think the year is almost half over!  One of my goals at the beginning of the year was to work on becoming a good songwriter. This includes all aspects of music making from writing to producing.  Also, I’m adding the finishing touches on my second short film script.  My first one, which was shot last summer, has been accepted to four film festivals and I hope this second one will also be as successful!

Any upcoming projects you can share?

This summer I will be shooting my second short film which I’m really excited about! I don’t want to give away too much, but it will be very dystopian.  I am also releasing music at the end of this year/ beginning of next year!
